To Vaccinate or Not To Vaccinate
|
That is the question up for discussion by pet owners and veterinarians. Several
years ago the State of Texas staged open discussions in communities to consider
the issue of vaccines in companion animals. There were heated debates as both
sides voiced their opinions. In the end, the State of Texas actually approved 3
year boosters for the Rabies vaccination.(which by the way is the only
vaccination required by law)
Among the issues that I consider important are---
1. Are dogs and Cats being over-vaccinated? Too many at one time? Too often?
2. Are vaccines harmful or helpful to our pet's health?
3. Is the occurrence of cancer and immune related diseases linked to vaccines?
4. Do the standard vaccine protocols need to be modified?
The label enclosed with each vaccine states "intended for immunization of
healthy animals". If an animal is battling another disease, I feel it is dangerous
to introduce vaccines at that time. There is a continued debate over the fact that
vaccines can actually bring on immune deficient diseases. Already, there is proof
that cancer can invade the injection site. The incidence of these cases may be
extremely small- but not to those who have been afflicted.
As an alternative to annual vaccines, a blood sample can be taken to determine if
a pet has developed antibodies to the level that provides protection. This is called
a titer test. These results can reveal which vaccines are needed.
Another point of consideration is the amount of exposure that an animal has to
others that may be harboring the disease. Each case must be evaluated
according to individual need. I always say "evaluate before you vaccinate".
I feel each pet owner should be informed about benefits and risks of vaccines
before the best course of action. Good health is always the best protection against
disease. High quality diet, plenty of exercise, and living in stress free
environment are the components of maintaining a healthy, happy companion.
Enjoy every day with your companion!
