Myth #8 My dog food must be 100% nutritionally complete
How many humans eat a 100% nutritionally complete meal every single time?
Does it make sense your dog should? What is important is to have balance over
time. AAFCO standards are based on the belief that dogs are omnivorous and
can be properly maintained on a grain based diet. Foods can get the 100%
designation in two ways: with a chemical analysis (meaning that these foods
theoretically meet a certain standard) or by passing feeding trial. Trials are the
higher standard, but can ultimately be met by exclusive feeding of the food for six
months to six dogs. There are no requirements to the follow long term effects on
the dogs. Also, if one food in a brand "family" passes the trial the other foods in
the family are also considered complete.
Myth # 9 Fat is bad for my dog
Fats are highly digestible, palatable, energy dense nutrients which are essential
for healthy coat, skin, reproduction, kidney function and absorption of the fat
soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. It is the main source of energy for the body.
Essential fatty acids which can not be produced by the dogs body are necessary
to the health of the dog and must be added by food or supplements. As with
everything else, the quality of the fat is important.
Myth #10 Quality food cost too much
Feeding your dog highly proceeded chemically laden food may seem cheaper,
but you will most likely end up with sick dog that requires expensive medical care.
There is no comparison when you consider the health benefits of quality food.
You can see the results for yourself. Just try it!
